German low-fare carrier, Eurowings, will commence a new link from Cologne Bonn Airport in Germany to Jeddah in Saudi Arabia from 5 November.

The new route, which marks the first direct connection from North Rhine-Westphalia to Saudi Arabia, will be served three times a week using an Airbus A320neo.

“Our new Airbus A320neo are not only the most efficient and quietest medium-haul jets in the world. They also allow us to achieve significantly higher ranges, which will enable us to reach attractive destinations in the Gulf region non-stop from Germany. We are all the more pleased that we are connecting Eurowings’ home airport directly with Saudi Arabia’s most important port city on the Red Sea for the first time,” said Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings.

He was joined by Cologne Bonn’s CEO, Thilo Schmid, who added: “For our location, the economy in the region and in particular, for our passengers, the new connection to Saudi Arabia means a further development of the great diversity of our network.”

With 3.75 million inhabitants, Jeddah is a central economic hub in the Arab world with its port and is also considered the gateway to Mecca, the central place of pilgrimage for Islam. The city is home to spectacular sights such as King Fahd’s Fountain, which is one of the largest in the world at more than 300m high. The old town of Jeddah is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
