In response to the challenge of providing quality services for passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), Miami International and Los Angeles International have welcomed the installation of autonomous mobility services. The technology has been deployed by  WHILL, specialists in developing electric mobility devices.

PRM are the fastest growing demographic in the airline industry and airports must adapt to meet their needs with recent trends including more wheelchair pushes, longer wait times and an increased number of staff injuries.

Describing WHILL’s technology and “cutting-edge” and “innovative”, Shane Bogni, VP of Business Development at WHILL Mobility Services, North America, added: “Our autonomous mobility services offer customers increased independence, reduce wait times and and enhanced customer experience.”

WHILL has collaborated with Envoy Air, a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group to test its service with positive customer feedback. Once a user selects their destination on a touch screen, the WHILL autonomous power chair takes over, safely and reliably transporting the customer to their desired gate.

“The Envoy team at Miami supports thousands of customer service requests every day, and we’re thrilled to partner with WHILL to pioneer the introduction of this autonomous mobility service in the US,” added Migdoel Rosa, Envoy VP of MIA Hub.
