Following a summer of strong passenger traffic across Sweden’s airports, leisure operator TUI is investing heavily in charter trips from regional airports across Sweden.

In total nine charter destinations will be operated from airports in the Swedavia portfolio, including Malmö, Umeå, Luleå and Visby. Swedes are renowned for heading to southern Europe to take advantage of the region’s warmer climes during the summer months, as well as the opportunity to make the most of the Mediterranean lifestyle and discover new cultures and places.

The move to expand operations from the four Swedavia hubs marks one of TUI’s biggest launches from regional airports with holiday destinations being served including Antalya in Turkey, Burgas in Bulgaria, Chania in Crete, Catania in Italy, Kos and Rhodes in Greece, Larnaca in Cyprus, Palma in Spain and Split in Croatia.

Responding to TUI’s summer schedule and its expansion from the four Swedish airports, Elizabeth Axtelius, Director Aviation Business at Swedavia said: “Our regional airports play an important role in their local areas in many ways. TUI making this investment in regional airports shows a great confidence in the Swedish air travel market and an understanding of the importance of reaching out to the world from the local area.”

TUI’s summer programme will be operated in collaboration with the airlines Jettime, Freebird and Aegean Airlines. The historically more popular destinations will have more departures, while the new ones will have fewer.

“Our new summer programme has a much wider range of destinations from Swedavia’s regional airports, several of which are new on offer,” said Tommy Servan, Commercial Director at TUI. “This will give our customers greater freedom of choice when choosing a destination. Many people prefer to travel from their regional airport and in this way, we offer travellers an extra convenience and service that enhances the entire holiday experience.”
