Swedavia is at the forefront of the move to reduce carbon emissions within the airport sector, having carried out ambitious climate work for many years and focusing efforts on a shift to sustainable aviation fuel as one of the key measures to reduce the climate impact of the aviation industry.
On Monday 4 March, following the submission of a report to the Swedish minister for environment and climate, Isabella Lövin, on policy instruments to promote the use of bio fuel in aviation, Swedavia responded favourably to the report’s main proposal for a reduction quota scheme promoting the use of bio fuel for air transport.
“Effective, long-term policy instruments are needed to reduce the negative climate impact of aviation,” said Jonas Abrahamsson, Swedavia’s President and CEO. “Introducing a reduction quota scheme as an alternative to the national aviation tax is thus a step in the right direction since it both reduces emissions and contributes to Swedish, large-scale production of bio fuel.”
He added: “If Sweden takes the global lead regarding bio fuel production, we can create a brand-new industry and many new jobs in Sweden. So it is really positive that the report also highlights this perspective.”
Swedavia has carried out ambitious climate work for many years, with the shift to bio jet fuel being one of the most important measures to reduce the climate impact of the aviation industry. Swedavia’s target is for five per cent of all jet fuel used at Swedavia’s ten airports in Sweden to be fossil-free by 2025. Since 2016, Swedavia also purchases bio jet fuel equivalent to the amount of fuel used for the company’s air travel for business purposes, about 450 tonnes of fuel annually.
