Sofia Airport in Bulgaria has awarded a €10 million contract for the supply and installation of a new baggage handling system (BHS) to Alstef. As well as supply and installation, the agreement also includes the maintenance of a state-of-the-art passenger baggage management solution.

Manged by Alstef Group’s BAGWARE, the new solution, which will enable self-service bag drop at pre-check-in for a flight as well as an agent-assisted service is 70% more efficient than the current system.

“Alstef Group is delighted to be selected as the baggage handling system technology partner of Sofia Airport and to suppor the airport’s quest to deliver a more streamlined and enjoyable passenger experience,” said Alstef CEO, Nicolas Breton.

The BHS upgrade is in line with the airport’s reconstruction of its check-in area in Terminal 2, which will see the number of check-in kiosks double in the coming months. It is also in line with the pace of traffic recovery at the airport with Jesus Caballero, Sofia Airport’s CEO, saying: “The baggage management system is key to how the airport operates. We’re buying a state-of-the-art technology solution that will make us faster and more efficient and that will benefit our millions of passengers. The project is part of the airport’s overall transformation, for which we are investing €76 million by the end of 2025.”
