Arizona’s Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport welcomed its 20 millionth passenger earlier this month, since beginning commercial air services in October 2007.

During the past 16 years, the airport has increased air services and now offers nonstop flights to more than 45 destinations across the US, with further growth anticipated thanks to Allegiant and other airlines announcing new destinations from the airport. Allegiant’s new nonstop service to Portland, Oregon begins on 17 November.

“The economic impact generated by millions of sun-seeking out-of-state visitors is enormous and Gateway Airport continues to be a major driver of hte Arizona economy,” said Mayor Chip Wilson, Chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority (PMGAA) Board of Directors.

“Gateway Airport provides exceptional value and convenience for air travellers coming to Arizona for that much-needed vacation or visit with family and friends,” he continued.

Ultra low-fare carrier, Allegiant Air has been the predominant airline at the Arizona hub. It currently has more than 30 out of 45 nonstop destinations at the airport, which is considered an important socio-economic gateway for the region. Passengers using it to access Arizona have spent billions of dollars on transporation, lodging, food and beverage, retail purchases, outdoor pursuits and entertainment during their trips.

Allegiant brings visitors to the region that might otherwise stay home or take a drive vacation within the boundaries of their local area. East Valley hotels, restaurants, golf course and entertainment venues rely on the on the millions of air travellers choosing Gateway Airport for their continued success.”

In line with the airport’s anticipated growth in passenger traffic it is opening a new five-gate, 30,000 sq. ft. South Concourse terminal addition in Febuary, which J. Brian O’Neill, PMGAA’s Executive Director/ CEO said will have “honour of serving the next 20 million airport passengers.”
