Smart baggage trolleys have been introduced at Munich Airport as part of a six-month pilot project in the airport’s Terminal 2.

Passengers at Munich Airport will be able to use a carry-on baggage trolley with an attached interactive tablet to guide them through the terminal. By manually entering flight data or scanning a boarding pass, travellers will receive their flight information and updates in real time, as well as a map of the terminal with an integrated directory and offers based on location.

“Digitalisation doesn’t always have to happen in the background,” said Dr. Jan-Henrik Andersson, Chief Commercial Officer, Munich Airport. “These tablets help our guests find their way around the terminal while ensuring they can always keep an eye on the latest flight information. The project is another element of our premium innovation hub. By connecting the digital and the analog world, it will bring real added value for our passengers.”

The baggage trolleys will be free of charge and can be hired in Terminal 2 after security and before duty free. Danish developer company Intelligent Track Systems (ITS) will be conducting the test phase, also providing the interactive displays for the trial.

“Our tablets can direct users to specific stores and also highlight retail activations and activities,” said Morten Pankoke, CEO, ITS. “These are often overlooked by passengers when they are in a rush or stressed. But if they can see the deals on the tablet, as well as the time they have to get to the gate using wayfinding, they are more likely to check out some store offers if they have the time.”
