Having witnessed Milan Bergamo Airport’s busiest day yet in terms of passenger traffic, with 54,571 passengers passing through the airport on 11 June, the airport’s managing company SACBO is ploughing ahead with its investment in infrastructure projects to support further growth at the Italian gateway.

“We have been working continuously to ensure the airport’s infrastructure development allows us to handle the ever-growing number of passengers we are experiencing, ensuring we can remain the leading choice for those travelling to and from the Lombardy region,” said Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, SACBO.

The airport has already begun expansion works including major investment in the northern apron and taxiway which will see an increase of 35% in capacity to meet with traffic volume expectations, a new terminal enlargement and the construction of a train station, which will serve a direct rail connection to Milan Centrale Station.

The terminal expansion will see an overall 78,000 m3 of new construction with a check-in hall and 22 new check-in desks and a baggage handling system extension all part of the first phase of the works due for completion by July 2024.

Meanwhile, the second phase will comprise an extension to the security area, duty free and boarding hall. UP to 14 C3 type security X-ray stations will also be deployed eliminating the need for passengers to remove liquids and laptops from their hand luggage.

In addition, two new non-Schengen gates and an expanded duty-free area will bolster the airport’s services and enhance the passenger experience.

The approval last year for the new railway connection between downtown Milan and Milan Bergamo will link the airport’s arrivals hall to the new station, which will be equipped with four platforms and is set for completion by the start of 2026 – in time for the next Winter Olympics.

“Throughout our progression and enhancement, particular attention has been and will continue to be given to the use of sustainable materials to reduce our environmental impact,” said Cattaneo. “SACBO’s investment in our airport is allowing us to further develop and place ourselves as one of the leading gateways in Milan and indeed Italy.”
