Italy’s Milan Bergamo Airport is celebrating a landmark year, having closed 2023 as its busiest year on record. The regional hub experienced unprecedented growth, welcoming more than 15 million passengers in a single year for the first time, solidifying its position as a gateway to the Lombardy region in northern Italy.

“We are thrilled to announce  a record-breaking year for Milan Bergamo Airport,” said Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation, SACBO commenting on the achievement. He added: “It is testament to the hard work and dedication of our team, as well as the strong collaboration with our airline partners. We remain committed to providing a world-class travel experience for our passengers and contributing to the economic and cultural vitality of the region.”

The 15,974,386 passengers handled by the airport in 2023 marks a 24.4% year-on-year increase compared with 2022 and improvement of 15.3% on the previous record achieved in 2019. The increase in traffic is a reflection of the airport’s appeal to a diverse range of business and leisure travellers with the airport extending its route network throughout 2023, introducing new destinations and increasing the frequency of existing routes. It also resulted in more than 100,000 yearly aircraft movements, the first time the threshold has been reached.

Carriers that began serving Milan Bergamo last year include Flydubai, Georgian Airways, Norwegian and Cabo Verde Airlines, while partners including Ryanair, Air Arabia, Volotea, Wizz Air and Aeroitalis increased their connectivity on existing routes and introduced new destinations. More than 140 destinations were served in 2023 with a network covering 42 countries.

Looking ahead, the airport shows no signs of slowing its growth with Norwegian reinforcing its commitment to Milan Bergamo with the introduction of four new routes, including Tromso and Copenhagen, as well as Stavanger and Helsinki.
