Menzies Aviation is providing low-cost carrier Ryanair with fully electric turnarounds at three European hubs. Amsterdam Schiphol, Gothenburg-Landvetter and Oslo Airport are the first three location in Europe where Menzies has the capability to provide fully electric green turns. All three hubs provide the charging infrastructure needed for electric equipment.

The agreement is in line with Menzies commitment to become carbon neutral by 2033. A key component of this goal is Menzies’ commitment to evolving its ground services equipment (GSE) fleet to become fully electric where possible, which will be achieved through the replacement of combustion engines with electric motors.

“We recognise the aviation industry’s role in addressing the climate emergency and we are committed to reducing our carbon footprint and becoming carbon neutral, for scope one and two emissions by 2033,” said Katy Reid, Head of Sustainability and Corporate Responsibility. We are taking action by switching to electric GSE where possible and ongoing collaboration with partners such as Ryanair will be vital to achieving this ambition.”

Meanwhile Ryanair’s Director of Sustainability and Finance, Thomas Fowler, explained that the low-cost carrier  which has committed to being carbon neutral by 2050 has “invested £22bn in new aircraft that will help us reduce our fuel consumption by approximately 16% on a per-seat basis. We can now offer zero emissions turnarounds at 11 locations, including Asmterdam, Gotehnburg and Oslo, when previously, a standard turnaround could emit up to 52.43kg of CO2.”
