London Luton Airport (LLA) has become the first UK airport to receive certification from the Airports Council International (ACI) Airport Health Accreditation programme.

The accreditation provides airports with an assessment of how well their health measures align with worldwide standards and industry best practices. Certification was awarded after the airport was assessed on new health measures and procedures that have been introduced following the COVID-19 pandemic. All passenger areas and processes at the airport were assessed. This included terminal access, check-in areas, security screening, boarding gates, lounges and airport shops and restaurants. The physical layout as well as communication with passengers is also taken into account.

“Airports are vital to the UK’s economic recovery, and as we welcome back passengers we are taking every measure possible to ensure that everyone in the airport is as safe as possible,” said Alberto Martin, CEO, LLA.

Luton follows in the footsteps of a handful of airports around the world that have received ACI’s health accreditation. In August, Turkey’s Istanbul Airport became the first airport in the world to receive accreditation, with the likes of Bologna Airport in Italy and Los Cabos Airport in Mexico swiftly following suit.
