Serving the UK capital, London City is to be among the first air transport hubs in the UK to offer an all-CT security scanner operation as of April 2023.

The airport is replacing its existing conventional security x-ray machines with state-of-the-art CT scanners provided by Leidos.  The new CT scanners process up to 550 trays per hour, per lane.

With close to 1.4 million passengers expected to travel through the London hub in 2023, the upgrade will speed up the security check for passengers by enabling them to leave everything in their hand luggage when they pass through security. The new scanners eliminate the need to remove items, such as laptops and approved liquids before going through the X-ray devices.

The airport ran a one-lane trial of the technology earlier this year, with COO, Alison FitzGerald saying: “We are always challenging ourselves to make the LCY experience even better, so this alongside the £12 million upgrade in the departure lounge will mean the journey through the airport in 2023 will be even slicker, with more space and better food & beverage and retail options.”

Nothing that speed, convenience and consistency of service are qualities that are important to passengers, FitzGerald added: “thanks to the Leidos solutions, alongside speed, it also delivers the highest security specifications.”

Jonathan Stone, Division Manager and Director of Aviation added: “Leidos focuses on constant innovation and security. Through our next-generation technology, airports can achieve high security levels, while providing a better travel experience for their passengers.”
