Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) has implemented SITA’s biometric-enabled Smart Path to support US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) in screening passengers when exiting the US. A gateway to Hawaii, HNL currently serves 21 airlines and more than 18 million departing passengers annually.

Fifty-four pods have been installed across the airport’s Terminals 1 & 2 to provide travellers with a touchless process that further secures and streamlines international departures. Those who can’t be matched to a photo on record through Biometric Exit or who choose to opt out of the process can proceed through the traditional inspection process.

Powered by NEC’s world-class biometric face capture solution, SITA’s Smart Path can verify a passenger’s identity in seconds, therefore enabling a more efficient boarding experience. It already has more than 600 biometric touchpoints deployed across the US, including at Miami, Orlando and San Francisco Airports and has a 99.5% match rate.

Edwin Sniffen, Director of the Hawaii Department of Transportation said: “This solution will help us support CBP’s congressional mandate while making the experience fast and efficient for our customers.”

He was joined by Matthys Serfontein, SITA President for the Americas, who added: “We have worked closely with the Hawaii Department of Transportation to support CBP’s mandate for biometric screening on exit. We are confident that SITA’s US Exit will greatly enhance the passenger experience at HNL while laying the foundation for an extended biometric passenger experience in the future.”
