Germany’s Evia Aero and Groningen Airport Eelde (GAE) in the Netherlands are collaborating to make sustainable regional aviation possible.

Evia Aero is developing an airline that operates electric powered aircraft and has selected GAE as its first future Dutch base of operations because of its market potential, its 22MW solar park and its Hydrogen Valley Airport Project. Diesel ground service equipment is currently being converted to work on hydrogen at the regional hub where an innovative electrolyser is also being developed.

With aircraft technology that pushes the boundaries of aviation in a scalable, sustainable and economically viable way, Evia Aero  is strengthening the development of the local regional economy by enabling customers to travel affordably, time-efficiently and sustainably. The company has already signed another letter of intent with Cranfield Aerospace Solutions (CAeS) to supply 10 hydrogen fuel cell conversion kits for Britten-Norman Islander aircraft.

Florian Kruse of Evia Aero explained, “For us, GAE is a good future base. The presence of locally generated green energy is a reason for us to choose GAE. The airport is working on a green hydrogen ecosystem, which will power our electric and partly hydrogen-powered future fleet.”

According to Meiltje de Groot of GAE: “Groningen Airport Eelde wants to be part of a network of European regions. It is a great opportunity to work together with Evia Aero on this.”
