The owners of Doncaster Sheffield Airport in the UK (Peel Group) have been urged to extend the consultation period on the future of the airport’s operations.

Peel Group began a six-week consultation in July after declaring the airport may “no longer be commercially viable”. However, politicians in South Yorkshire have written to Peel Group Chairman John Whittaker calling for the extension of the consultation period until the end of the year.

The letter states: “We encourage Peel Group to extend the consultation period to the end of 2022 to enable meaningful engagement and consideration of options.”

It also underlines the disappointment “that the consultation period was launched with little notice and for a short 6-week period over the summer months.”

It also calls for the owners to “outline all of the options they are open to exploring for the future of the airport, including alternative ownership and airport operation models,” while stating “we want to ensure you are equally committed and encourage you to develop options that will maintain aviation and commercial passenger operations ad Doncaster Sheffield Airport.”
