Broome International Airport in Kimberley, Australia, has finalised a 10-year air services agreement with Virgin Australia, underpinning the airport’s continuing role as the gateway to the northwestern part of Western Australia.

The agreement, which covers landing access, terminal fees, security screening and future capital works at the airport, replaces a previous five-year agreement. It also comes on the back of the Australian carrier growing its market share on the Perth-Broome route from 34% to over 40% in 2021.

Broome Airport chief executive Paul McSweeney said the new agreement provides the airport with the certainty needed to continue to invest in efficient passengers services and improved passenger amenities.

This, he added, would further enhance the airport’s role as the region’s most important tourism entry point.

More than 400,000 passengers a year transit through Broome Airport, which also serves as a general aviation hub for 10 companies servicing remote communities. It is also used as a home base for emergency services, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service and a north-west coast-watch operation.
