Birmingham Airport (BHX) has announced that its new security screening area is on schedule to open in June 2024. The Next-Generation Security (NGS) system will deliver a speedier and simpler pre-flight screening process for BHX passengers, capable of serving significantly more passengers per hour during peak times.

Until the NGS launches in June 2024, passengers at BHX will continue to use the existing pre-flight security area. The existing guidelines will remain in place as well, including the removal of liquids and large electrical items from hand luggage.

“Customers will see construction outside the terminal and various areas cordoned off,” said Nick Barton, Chief Executive, BHX. “Walking routes and queueing spaces, including on the ground floor, will change this summer as work progresses. Our wayfinding and other signage will change too – and, of course, our friendly staff will be on hand to help customers stay on the move.”

According to the airport’s 2018 Master Plan, the new upgrade will support growth in customer volumes from 12m a year (pre-pandemic) to 18m a year by 2033. BHX has made a total investment of £40m for the security hall upgrade, which will be compliant with the UK Government’s new standards coming into effect on 1 June 2024.

“Our new security area is a major investment which will make things quicker and easier for customers,” added Barton, “and the improved efficiency it delivers will help grow our annual customer numbers from 12m to 18m by 2033, in turn helping boost economic growth across the West Midlands region.”
