Beumer Group has joined forces with Hörmann Klatt Conveyors to launch an innovative solution for hand baggage screening at airports. The so-called ‘Smart Security Lane – SECTRO allows for peaks of around 1,000 passengers to be processed via one module per hour. It also requires 50% fewer CT scanners and can be operated with a third fewer staff.

For passengers, the solutions means a particularly relaxed security check: hand baggage is deposited in a newly designed self-service area, with each person generally only requiring one lockable container linked biometrically to the passenger. Once baggage has been checked, it can be collected again in a seperate area, minimising the risk of lost baggage or theft. If a piece of baggage does need to be checked seperately, the owners are directed to a recheck areea via a screen display.

“More than a third of all passengers experience security checks as a particular stress factor,” said Ronald Willems, Divisional Director Airport at Beumer Group. “With SECTRO, we are not only securing a noticeable improvement in the passenger experience, but also reducing the personnel required for security and baggage control. In times of a persistent shortage of skilled labour, this is a competitive advantage for airports that should not be underestimated.”

Following a prototype of the new system being finalised at the end of 2023, all the necessary certifications have now been initiated, with the first pilot project scheduled to start in the course of 2024.

Describing the system as a pioneering solution, Florian Pöckl, Managing Director of Hörmann Klatt Conveyors added: “With a higher level of automation, we are making air travel more pleasant and efficient. Everyone benefits from this: the airport operators, the airlines and last, but not least, the passengers.”
