US-based airport operator, Avports, and energy technology company, Baker Hughes, have agreed to develop, implement and operate onsite microgrid solutions for airports. The two companies have agreed to address emissions reductions, zero-emission buildings, horizontal airport infrastructure, vehicles and aircraft systems.

While Avports focuses on airport innovation and sustainability initiatives that include using green hydrogen at its managed locations, Baker Hughes’ broad energy technology portfolio includes both hydrogen-ready turbines and heat recovery solutions that are ideal for microgrid applications. The collaboration between the two organisations will therefore accelerate the adoption and development of customised microgrids to address each airport’s specific needs.

Commenting on how Baker Hughes’ commitment to emissions reductions has allowed the company to deploy low-carbon and hydrogen technologies in other industries, Bob Perez, VP of Project Development said, “The opportunity to bring these solutions to airports, in collaboration with Avports’ proven track record in airport management, is very promising as the increasing need and demands of these infrastructures must be more resilient, efficient and cost-effective.”

Meanwhile, Jorge Roberts, CEO of Avports, noted that providing a technical and economic roadmap to help airports meet their energy needs of the future is critical. “Our partnership with Baker Hughes brings world-class technology and know-how together with our ability to support airport customers to realise these solutions at their facility.”
