With sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) integral to reducing aviation’s carbon footprint, stakeholders including airports have welcomed the adoption of the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation as they look forward to the wider deployment of SAF globally.

The adoption marks an important and timely step necessary to realising the ambitious decarbonisation targets set ou in the Destination 2050 roadmap. SAFs are a crucial component of this roadmap and the adoption of the ReFuelEU legislation lays the foundation for ambitious blending shares of SAF in aviation fuel.

Airports Council International (ACI) Europe was joined by other aviation associations including, Airlines 4 Europe (A4E), Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO,  Aerospace and Defence Industries Association (ASD and European Regions Airline Association (ERA).

While the adoption of the regulation indicates a clear signal for EU investors and industrial partners to unleash SAF investments, the EU now needs to ensure the required uptake of SAF consumption will boost the European SAF industry.

A robust worldwide climate policy framework for SAF is now needed with political support for aviation’s net-zero future of aviation integral to success.
