In recognition of its efforts to reduce carbon emissions, Harry Reid International Airport has received Level 1 certification from the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme.

Referred to as ‘Mapping’ Level 1 certification required the airport to calculate and submit its 2021 carbon footprint for an independent review and verification. This was done by evaluating scope 1 and 2 emissions, including purchased electricity, natural gas, diesel and gasoline used by operations controlled by the airport. Airline fuel emissions (which are considered scope 3 for an airport) aren’t included in this calculation.

The results confirmed 85,412 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) or 4.74 pounds of CO2e per passenger per year.

“As we continue to see record growth in air travel, we are dedicated to making sustainability a core consideration in all areas of our operations,” said Rosemary Vassiliadis, Clark County Director of Aviation.

“By taking this crucial step of calculating our carbon footprint, we have a baseline metric to measure future successes,” she continued.

Other efforts at the airport which underline its efforts to commit to sustainable growth include: installing electric charging infrastructure to better support airport partners’ electric ground servicing equipment (GSE)., as well as making electric vehicle charging stations available to customers in valet parking, purchasing electric buses and retrofitting interior and exterior lighting to LED.
