Passenger traffic in December marked a 4 percent increase from the same month in 2023, while the overall total for the year marked a 1 percent increase on the previous year.
In addition over 40 routes were added last year, the majority of them at Stockholm Arlanda and Goteborg Landvetter with Norwegian opening the most new routes via the two hubs. Kiruna also added new routes to Copenhagen with SAS and Paris with Air France. Of the 40 routes added, 18 were brand new destinations for the Swedish airport operator. Kiruna had the strongest passenger trend in December compared with the same month in 2023 and the strongest trend compared with pre-pandemic levels in December 2019. Ronneby Airport meanwhile had the weakest trend in traffic levels in December compared with December last year and Luleå Airport had the strongest trend in traffic levels for the full year 2024 compared with pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
“The year ended strongly and demand for international air travel has continued to grow and the decline in domestic travel slowed during the second half of December 2023,” commented Jonas Abrahamsson, President and CEO of Swedavia.
He added: “The final scheduled BRA flight has taken off from Bromma and since the end of the year domestic air traffic has been consolidated at Arlanda. In the long term, this strengthen connectivity for Sweden in terms of both domestic and international air travel.”
While international travel increased by 6 per cent year-on-year to over 1.7 million passengers across Swedavia’s airports in December, domestic travel decreased by 3 per cent to just over 569,000 passengers.
With 2025 now underway, Abrahamsson noted that the remaining parts of the new marketplace will open at Arlanda and the airport operator is now “looking forward to presenting new initiatives for the future.”
