Regional airline Loganair has announced plans to open its tenth base at Southampton Airport, a move that will significantly improve regional connectivity from the South and provide new job opportunities for pilots, cabin crew, and engineers.

The base is expected to be operated by two ATR 72-600s, the first of which should arrive in October 2025, creating an extra 140,000 seats per year for the airline.

“The DNA of our business for over six decades has been to connect regions and cities and to connect island communities to the mainland,” said Luke Farajallah, chief executive officer at Loganair. “Southampton offers a unique location, and we believe the markets, local people and businesses will respond well to our presence in this thriving part of the UK. We are also looking forward to welcoming our new team members who will be recruited from the local areas.”

In addition to the new base, Loganair has announced plans for a new route between Southampton and Manchester and another from Manchester to Exeter from 26 October. The airline will also increase the aircraft capacity of the Southampton to Edinburgh route from 49 to 72 passengers.

“Establishing what will be its tenth base will not only significantly enhance the region’s connectivity it will deliver a welcome boost for the local economy by creating meaningful employment opportunities,” said Kam Jandu, chief executive of AGS Airports. “Manchester is the most sought-after route by businesses across the region and was previously used by more than 200,000 passengers per year. The re-introduction of this route will further strengthen the economic ties between the two cities and Loganair’s extensive airline interline agreements will open even more global connection opportunities for our passengers, making the world even more accessible from their local airport.”

Following its acquisition by AGS Airports, Southampton Airport announced earlier in February plans to install Next-Generation Security Checkpoint (NGSC) scanners to improve security and operational efficiency.
