Sofia Airport is ramping up its sustainability initiatives with 11,369.62 tonnes of blended SAF (two per cent) used to refuel 1,894 aircraft in January, representing 75 per cent of the airport’s departing flights.

SOF Connect, the airport’s operator, first offered SAF refueling at the beginning of 2025 following the completed certification audit of Sofia’s SAF farm. In one month, over 600 kilogrammes of carbon emissions have been reduced.

“Sofia Airport is becoming a leader in Europe in the use of sustainable fuel. The successful certification of our fuel farm, SAF refuelling and the resulting expected savings of hundreds of tonnes of carbon emissions are clear evidence of our commitment to greener aviation,” said Jesús Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect. “This is another important step towards a sustainable future for air transport in Bulgaria and Europe.”

This falls in line with the European Union’s new rules, effective as of 1 January 2025, that aviation fuel suppliers must provided a minimum of 2 per cent SAF out of the total amount of fuel supplied to the airports. Sofia Airport joined the ACI’s Airport Carbon Accreditation Programme in 2016 and has achieved Level 4 “Transformation” status in the Airport Carbon Management and Reduction Programme, the first Bulgarian airport to reach the accreditation level.
