San Jose City Council is pressing ahead with plans to to connect San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) with Diridon Station via an innovative transit solution. Glydways’ Diridon-Airport Connector will use small, autonomous vehicles driving along a fixed guideway to transport more than 2,000 passengers per hour in each direction between the station and the airport.

The proposed system is expected to be completed in less than a decade and if successful could be expanded to other corridors across San Jose and the South Bay.

“Diridon Station is poised to become the most significant rail and bus hub on the West Coast in the decades ahead,” said San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. “It just makes sense to connect this central station with San Jose’s exceptional airport, which serves over 11 million people per year.”

John Ristow, san Jose’s Director of Transportation, added: “This is an early step in an exciting, first-of-its-kind project for San Jose. We’re hoping that this project serves as a model for future transit solutions that can be quickly expanded across San Jose.”

With San Jose Airport on a positive growth trajectory according to Director of Aviation, John Aitken, “this new transit connection to our terminals will provide another convenient option for our passengers and reiterate why our airport is recognised as the no. 1 airport in North America for customer experience.”

The agreement is being led by equity partner Plenary Americas, a US infrastructure developer and investor with a portfolio of 59 projects boasting a total value of more than $23 billion. Their proposal will see the cost and risk of the project shared between themselves and the city.
