


San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is moving ahead with a major expansion of its air cargo infrastructure, backed by an investment of more than USD 300 million. The project will deliver a next generation cargo terminal designed around advanced automation, enabling the airport to handle rising cargo volumes more efficiently and reinforcing its position as a key West Coast gateway. Lödige Industries, a global specialist in automated cargo handling systems, has been selected to equip the facility with customised technology for high throughput, fully automated operations.
The new terminal is intended to provide fast, reliable and scalable cargo handling for airlines, freight forwarders and logistics partners. Construction is scheduled for completion in Spring 2028, with operations expected to begin later that year. “This investment reflects SFO’s commitment to providing modern, efficient cargo facilities that support our airline partners and the regional economy,” said Samuel Chui, project manager at San Francisco International Airport.
Jonathan Hardy, managing director North America at Lödige Industries, said the project places SFO at the forefront of West Coast air cargo logistics. “Our automated systems are engineered for maximum efficiency and scalability, enabling SFO to handle growing cargo volumes while fully leveraging advanced automation and digital connectivity,” he noted.
At the centre of the 310,000 square foot, two storey terminal are three Elevating Transfer Vehicles (ETVs), designed for rapid, fully automated storage and retrieval of Unit Load Devices. Operating on a rail guided system, the ETVs can move ULDs vertically and horizontally at the same time, increasing operational speed, flexibility and throughput while reducing turnaround times.
Hardy added that rising e commerce and global trade continue to drive demand for air cargo capacity, prompting major U.S. hubs to modernise. He described the SFO project as an important milestone in Lödige Industries’ North American strategy, building on ongoing work at New York JFK and Toronto Pearson.
