Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has agreed to acquire 45 Embraer E195-E2 aircraft with purchase rights for an additional 10 of the aircraft type.
The agreement, which marks the largest SAS jet order direct from the manufacturer, supports SAS’s long-term fleet renewal strategy and unlocks network growth opportunities.
“This is a defining moment for SAS,” said Anko van der Werff, President and CEO of SAS. “The Embraer E195-E2 is key to enabling future growth and improved connectivity across Scandinavia and beyond,” he added. Van der Werff also revealed the flag-carrier for Sweden, Norway and Denmark, took its time in choosing the right aircraft in line with its strategy to optimise operations and enhance connectivity across Scandinavia and Europe. The size and range are ideally suited to complement SAS’ existing fleet and route structure, allowing for more frequencies, better network flexibility and lower trip costs, according to Embraer.
The E2, said Van der Werff, “will enable [SAS] to serve more routes with lower emissions, better economics, and a premium experience for passengers.”
Adding that the E2 is the “quietest single aisle jet available today,” Arjan Meijer, President and CEO Embraer Commercial Aviation, noted it is “29 per cent more fuel efficient” and boasts “a 62 per cent reduction in noise footprint over the previous generation jet.”
Delivering on SAS’s expansion strategy
Meijer added he is “confident that these aircraft will play a crucial role in SAS’ fleet renewal and expansion strategy, supporting their ambitious growth plans and enhancing their operational capabilities.”
Headquartered in Stockholm, SAS operates from its principal hub at Copenhagen Airport, with complementary bases at Oslo and Stockholm Arlanda. It serves a network of regional airports across Europe, as well as links with North America and Asia (including Bangkok and Tokyo).
