Qatar Airways has celebrated a 10-year anniversary of connecting Maputo in Mozambique with Doha from where passengers can connect with the airline’s extensive global network.

The Middle Eastern carrier inaugurates its services between the two destinations in 2012, offering three weekly flights initially. In 2016 it swapped its Boeing 777 aircraft operating the route with a Boeing 787 Dreamliner and increased the frequency to provide four weekly services to the Mozambican capital.

“Africa is one of Qatar Airways’ key growth regions in its global network and we are delighted to be celebrating this milestone at Maputo International Airport,” said Qatar Airways’ VP Africa, Hendrik du Preez.

“Qatar Airways has shown its commitment to the African market as the only airline that never stopped flying to southern Africa during the pandemic. This allowed for the movement of medicines, delivering 20 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to Mozambique, and essential travel between the region and the rest of the of the world,” du Preez continued.

By maintaining its operations in the region, the airline was able to grow its services again and increase frequencies efficiently once the continent started to open up again.

Elsewhere in Africa, Qatar Airways started operations to Luanda, Harare and Lusaka in 2021 and restarted flights to Windhoek in mid-2022. It also launched services to Kano and Port Harcourt in Nigeria in addition to existing Lagos and Abuja flights.
