With double digit growth in 2019, Arizona’s Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport has set a record for commercial passenger activity. Last year was the Phoenix-Mesa’s best year ever with 1,774,763 passengers travelling through the airport. The passenger growth marks a 15.86% increase over last year.

Marking the 20th consecutive month of record year-on-year growth, December 2019 saw 171,189 passengers use the airport. New nonstop destinations, larger aircraft offering more seats and increased frequency on several routes have all been credited with contributing to the airport’s success.

“The growth at Gateway Airport over the past few years has been phenomenal and important for the region’s economy,” said Gila River Indian Community Lieutenant Governor Robert Stone, Chair of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority (PMGAA) Board. Both WestJet and Swoop began their winter season earlier last year bringing more Canadians to enjoy the warmer Arizona weather as Governor Stone added:  “Residents in the Greater Phoenix area, and out of state sun-seeking travelers, appreciate the value and unparalleled convenience of using Gateway Airport.”

Tens of millions of dollars have been invested in the airport in recent years to accommodate the anticipated growth in passenger traffic. Upgrades to the airport have included facility and infrastructure capacity enhancements projects as well as improvements to baggage handling systems, TSA security screening areas, surface access and parking.  While a new Starbucks opened in the terminal at the end of 2019, additional restaurants and retail locations are also currently underway. Panera Bread, O.H.S.O. Brewery, Macayo’s Mexican and infusion Coffee and Tea are all due to open later this year.

“Gateway Airport would like to thank its airline partners, airport tenants, our passengers, and member community partners for making 2019 a record year,” concluded J. Brian O’Neill, AAE. Executive Director/ CEO of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority. “Arizona continues to be one of the fastest growing states in the nation and, as more businesses and families relocate here, the Airport looks forward to providing a Just Plane Easy travel experience to a growing number of new passengers.”
