Part of the Vinci Airports network, Belfast International Airport has inaugurated phase one of its GBP 100 million five-year investment programme.

The project, which includes a terminal extension featuring  a state-of-the-art security hall and next generation security equipment, an immersive duty-free retail experience as well as improvements to the arrivals area and a new external forecourt was officially opened by Northern Ireland’s First Minister and Deputy First Minister on Tuesday 6 May.

Nicolas Notebaert, CEO of Concessions at Vinci and President of Vinci Airports noted, “This first delivery of Vinci Airports’ investment programme to modernise Belfast International Airport improves the passenger experience with state-of-the-art security features and a high-quality retail offer.”

With phase one complete, further investments are planned over the next three years. The first GBP25 million phase features a transformative 1600sq.m. duty free retail area, while the new security hall has been purpose built for growth to ensure the area can adapt with passenger demand. The next-generation security screening equipment also means that passengers no longer have to remove liquids or electronics from hand luggage, ensuring a more seamless, less fraught experience for passengers.

“As the airport plays a pivotal role for aviation, tourism and the local economy, Vinci Airports is committed to boosting connectivity and sustainable growth for Northern Ireland,” added Notebaert.

The airport had a record year in 2024 with over 6.75 million passengers flying through the Northern Irish. It is expecting another record year for passenger traffic in 2025.
