Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey has partnered with Onyx Solar on its groundbreaking photovoltaic glass canopy, which is located at the drop-off area of its departures area.

The installation includes 540 crystalline silicon photovoltaic glass panels covering an area of more than 2,200 m2. Onyx Solar’s PV laminates safety glass is made of two plies of fully tempered glass with PERC solar cells embedded in it. The innovative canopy allows the airport to generate free electricity from the sun, therefore reducing the airport’s carbon footprint and energy costs, while protecting passengers from sunlight and weather conditions.

This latest installation at Newark is one of several measures being deployed by the airport to improve its sustainability and achieve LEED Silver certification.
