Smiths Detection will supply New Zealand’s Aviation Security Service (AvSec) with advanced checkpoint security technology for the Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown and Wellington international airports. The new systems will begin installation this year.

The security system provider will supply 35 HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX computed tomography (CT) X-ray machines meeting international regulations in both the USA and EU. The machines, which allow passengers to leave laptops and liquids in their cabin baggage, will improve the airports’ cost and energy efficiency.

“Through the roll-out of this technology, passengers flying out of New Zealand’s international airports will have a smoother and more efficient checkpoint experience,” said Aurelien Guilbert, Head of North & South Asia Market, Smiths Detection.

The contract also covers the supply of Smiths Detection’s iLane.evo automatic tray return system, which delivers a steady flow of trays, as well as the iCMORE Weapons algorithm which can identify knives, guns, gun parts or ammunition concealed in bags.

According to Ben Smith, Group Manager Strategic Development, Aviation Security Service, the new Smiths Detections integrated checkpoint security system will help evolve and improve New Zealand’s security screening while also enhancing passenger facilitation and experience.

“Having seen this system during the trial in Christchurch and other international airports already, we are confident in being able to deploy advanced technology solutions within our security checkpoints,” said Smith.
