Vienna Airport has announced that its new CT scanners will be in operation at the central security checkpoints in all terminals from Friday 3 July.
Departing passengers will be able to leave electronic devices such as laptops and mobile phones, as well as liquids, in their hand luggage during security screening. Liquids of up to two litres can also be carried in hand luggage.
Vienna Airport says it is investing around €25 million in the transition to the new CT technology, with 35 units purchased for this purpose. “Our passengers already benefit from an average waiting time of only around five minutes at the security checkpoints – a top performance by European standards,” Julian Jäger, Joint CEO and COO of Vienna Airport said.
“With the full commissioning of the new CT scanners, we are making security checks significantly easier and more efficient just in time for the start of the holiday season. This modern technology simplifies the process for our passengers and enhances the quality of security screening. In doing so, we are taking another important step towards positioning Vienna Airport as one of the most modern and convenient hubs in Europe.
“Nevertheless, due to the high volume of travel expected on the first holiday weekend, we recommend that passengers allow a little more time for check-in, security screening and any necessary border controls, and arrive at the airport slightly earlier.”
All central security lanes in all terminals at Vienna Airport will equipped with new CT scanners and the rollout will be completed across the airport – and from Friday morning, all departing passengers at Vienna Airport will experience the benefits of the new technology. A total of 35 new units have been purchased, representing an investment volume of around €25 million.
The airport highlights that individual items such as food, creams, honey, jams or thermos flasks may trigger additional checks and that even though liquids of up to two litres will be permitted in hand luggage in future, passengers are advised to carry liquids in smaller containers wherever possible. Experience has shown that these are less likely to require additional checks and help ensure a smoother process at security screening. Since not all airports have introduced CT scanners yet, passengers are also advised to check the current regulations at their respective destination or transfer airport.
