The announcement sets an industry benchmark with Smiths Detection currently the only supplier to receive approval from the Netherlands’ National Coordinator for Security and Counter-terrorism (NCTV), thus meeting strict EU and Dutch requirements.

Smiths Detection’s iCMORE Automated Prohibited Items Detection Systems (APIDS), which uses AI to identify a range of prohibited items at airport security checkpoints, was rigorously tested, verified and validated by the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research.

The certification reaffirms Smiths Detection’s commitment to being “best in class” and meeting the “certification standards – setting a new industry benchmark for cutting-edge detection solutions,” said Cymoril Metivier, Global Director Digital at Smiths Detection.

The technology automates the detection of an extensive list of prohibited items as baggage passes through Computed Topography (CT) security scanning machines. The algorithm provides invaluable support to security screeners, enhancing security and creating a more efficient, seamless experience for passengers. The solution also marks a major step in the journey towards full automation and alarm-only viewing, reducing manual screening interventions and enabling customers to achieve operational savings.

Underlining that the company remains committed to “delivering innovative and revolutionary solutions”, Metivier continued that these efforts will “elevate passenger safety and experience, ensure compliance with the highest and evolving security standards and safeguard critical operations across the aviation industry.”
