Three years after the official ground-breaking ceremony for the extension of the rail tunnel at Munich Airport, the shell has now been completed on schedule with Munich Airport spending a total of €115 million on the construction work.
The existing tunnel which ended at the Terminal 2 satellite building has now been extended eastward allowing trains and the S-Bahn light rail service to pass through the airport, providing a better connection between the airport and southern and eastern Bavaria as well as the Salzburg region.

Measuring 61,000 sq. m. the excavation site for the tunnel covered the same total area as five football pitches. During construction, 390,000 cubic metres of soil were shifted and roughly 150,000 cubic metres of concrete installed. Around 16,000 metric tonnes of reinforcing steel were used to build the tunnel, amounting to one and a half times the weight of the Eiffel Tower.

“Improved connections between Munich airport and the railroad network are absolutely crucial to the future development of Munich Airport,” said Jost Lammers, Munich Airport’s CEO. “They will be good for passenger convenience as well as for combatting climate change. The more travellers arrive at our airport by train, the lower the harmful emissions produced by feeder traffic.”
