Loch Lomond Seaplanes, the UK’s only commercial seaplane service, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for two of ElFly’s NOEMI electric seaplanes.
The agreement makes Loch Lomond Seaplanes (LLS) the first British customer to agree to acquire the nine-seat NOEMI (No Emission) seaplanes, with an option to acquire three more.
Amphibious infrastructure
Not only will the collaboration introduce electric aviation to Scotland, it will also support the development of the infrastructure for seaplane operations as well as regulatory advocacy. With its 200km range, amphibious design and 200km/h cruising speed, the NOEMI will help unlock the latent economic potential in coastal communities, replacing five or six hour-long train rides between major population hubs with 45-minute flights.
“The Noemi seaplane represents a perfect blend of tradition and innovation,” said David West, Managing Director and Founder of Loch Lomond Seaplanes. Adding that there is strong demand for passengers flying in the region for air transport links with a reduced environmental impact, he added, “There is huge demand for a flying boat style seaplane, and one that produces no emissions is all the better.”
Seaplane expertise
Currently operating a fleet of Cessna 208 Caravan floatplane flights to various destinations in the UK and across Scotland, LLS is already well versed in seaplane operations. West has worked with the UK Civil Aviation Authority on establishing new regulations to enable the introduction of larger seaplanes on scheduled routes and supported the Croatian Government with new seaplane regulations to enable the start of scheduled seaplane flights back in 2014. He has also advised the Indian Government on commencing seaplane operations in India.
Describing West as a “legendary figure,” Elfly CEO, Eric Lithun, said the collaboration with LLS has “huge potential.” He added that with West’s expertise and the NOEMI’s technology “the future of regional aviation in the UK is bright.”
