The Dominican hub, Las Américas Airport, inaugurates cargo warehouse, breaks ground on new terminal and confirms readiness of alternate runway all in one day.

The opening of the new cargo facility was complemented by Vinci Airports, which operates Las Américas, also  breaking ground on a new passenger terminal at the airport.

President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, oversaw the inauguration ceremony for the new cargo warehouse alongside other local authorities earlier in August.

The alternate runway 18-36 was made operational through the adaptation of the former taxiway Juliet.

The project, which was carried out by Vinci Airports through its local subsidiary Aerodom, in close cooperation with the Dominican Civil Aviation Institute (IDAC). It will help ensure uninterrupted air connectivity during upcoming improvements to the main runway 17-35. The work included technical studies, structural upgrades, runway lighting installation, safety zone levelling signage and full compliance with national and international regulations.

“Aerodom and Vinci Airports are unwavering in their commitment to the development of the Dominican Republic,” said Monika Infante, CEO of Aerodom.

“Each investment we make is a step forward in strengthening airport infrastructure, driving economic growth and ensuring efficient, and continuous air connectivity.”

Vinci Airports through Aerodom has invested more than USD 250 million in the airport’s new passenger terminal. The new facility is on track to be complete by 2028 and will expand the airport’s capacity by four million passenger per year.

Setting a new benchmark in Dominican airport infrastructure, the terminal will feature a sustainable design and will operate alongside the existing terminal.
