A new high-speed rail link which is due to open between 2029 and 2033 could benefit passengers travelling from Birmingham Airport in the UK.
The rail link is expected to cut journey times between London and Birmingham from the current 70 minutes down to as low as 32 minutes. Plans to build a direct link from the airport into the HS2 line connecting it with London are said to be advanced with the project to build the new station at the airport currently out to tender.
Speaking to local newspaper, the Express and Star, Nick Barton, Birmingham Airport’s Chief Executive, underlined the new link will ease existing capacity constraints at London Heathrow.
“We’ve got the added benefit coming our way of HS2 and we’re a huge beneficiary of that.
“The station box will be her and that can put you into London with the right connecting time in under 40 minutes.”
Journeys to central London from Heathrow using public transport typically take around 50 minutes.
The high-speed rail link represents a fraction of the huge investment made by Birmingham Airport, which is investing millions over the next few years to improve facilities at the airport, which is a gateway to the Midlands region in the UK. “It’s well understood that the airport’s success is driven by the economic strength of the region – obviously we’re a dominant gateway for this region and the region is doing fantastically well,” said Barton.
