Atlantic Aviation has broken ground on an extensive redevelopment at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth.

A new FBO facility, hangars and ramp are all in the pipeline for Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport after Atlantic Aviation expanded its leasehold at the Alabama airport. The redevelopment is due to be complete in early 2027.

“This investment in the expansion of our presence in Birmingham is a result of outstanding collaboration with airport and city leadership,” said Kurt Schmidt, SVP of Operations for Atlantic’s Southeast region. “And while we take great pride in the design of the new facility itself, we are equally as proud of the economic development benefits it will bring to the airport, its users and the local community.”

The development of an executive 7,500 sq. ft. FBO terminal and fuel farm with increased capacity are complemented by two hangars – each roughly 30,000 sq. ft. with office and shop spaces and 28-foot doors for handling large jets. In additional, around seven acres of ramp space with concrete hardstands will also be added adjacent to private secure terminal space in one of the new hangars.

The FBO terminal will feature an interior design that infuses southern charm and luxury with functionality. In addition to a large lobby, crew and passenger lounges and multiple conference rooms, the FBO will incorporate a new training area and increased office space.

“Atlantic Aviation has a long history of serving customers here in Birmingham and we are thrilled to see this level of commitment to providing first-class facilities and service,” said Ashby Pate, Board Chair of the Birmingham Airport Authority.

Sustainability is at the core of the new build with recycled materials to be used throughout the construction of the FBO, as well as high-efficiency HVAC, lighting and plumbing fixtures. Solar panels will be deployed on one of the new hangars to offset its energy use, while the other hangar will be future-proofed for solar capabilities in the future. The facility will also feature six electric vehicle charging stations. Once the new FBO is complete the existing facility will undergo minor renovations to support continued operational use, however two out of five existing hangars will be demolished to make way for the new, larger hangars.
