Assaia has announced that Hokkaido Airports Co. (HAP) will deploy its ApronAI turnaround management technology across the international terminal at New Chitose Airport, marking the first fully Japanese supported implementation of the platform. Facilitated by Marubeni Corporation, the project also represents Japan’s first full scale deployment of a computer vision based turnaround management solution.

ApronAI uses advanced computer vision and AI powered video analytics to continuously monitor key turnaround activities such as fuelling, baggage handling, boarding and pushback. The system automatically detects when tasks fall behind schedule and alerts operational teams in real time, enabling faster intervention and helping prevent minor delays from escalating across the wider network. The platform supports improved on time performance and more efficient gate utilisation throughout the day.

Jan Willem Kappes, chief commercial officer at Assaia, said the deployment builds on a long standing collaboration with HAP and Marubeni. “This marks an important step in HAP’s vision for more connected, data driven airport operations. HAP recognises the value of real time operational intelligence in helping stakeholders respond faster to developing issues on the ground and create more resilient operations.”

He added that airports across Asia Pacific are facing rising operational pressure as passenger volumes and air traffic continue to grow, making turnaround optimisation and gate capacity management increasingly critical.

Mr. Tomosada, managing executive officer at HAP, said the technology will strengthen collaboration across the terminal. “By using the latest AI technology, this deployment will help visualise operations and strengthen collaboration among all parties across our entire international terminal. We believe it will support our commitment to delivering more efficient airport operations.”

The system is scheduled to go live in winter 2026 and will introduce full Japanese language support for the first time, enabling frontline teams to work directly within the platform in their native language.

Mr. Okazaki, executive officer at Marubeni, said the deployment is the culmination of efforts dating back to 2019. “New Chitose Airport is a strategic hub expected to see further growth. We are confident that this solution will help optimise workflows, reduce manpower requirements and improve quality for everyone working at the airport.”
