Smiths Detection’s Hi-SCAN 6040 CTiX 3D X-ray scanner has been deployed at the UK’s primary gateway in line with nationwide plans to make the passenger journey safer and more seamless.
The implementation of Smiths Detection’s next-generation computed tomography (CT) scanning technology is part of the airport’s GBP 1 billion upgrade programme. It also builds on a long-standing partnership between the two organisations – Heathrow originally collaborated with the technology provider in March 2021.
The HI-SCAN 6040 CTi scanner enables passengers to leave liquids up to two litres in their baggage when going through security. Electronic devices, including laptops and tablets, can also stay in bags. This also means fewer tray steps and a smoother, faster journey and a more pleasant overall airport experience.
With C3 compliance – the highest performance standard for explosives detection systems for cabin baggage, Smiths Detection’s equipment also improves security.
“Achieving C3 compliance is a shared milestone that demonstrates our joint focus on strong security, operational efficiency, and an improved passenger experience,” said Andy Evripides, Head of Market UK and Ireland.
He explained that the CTiX scanner combines high-resolution volumetric imaging with powerful automatic threat recognition to offer security teams clear, detailed views of bag contents and helps reduce manual checks, enhancing throughput without compromising safety.
Other airports that have deployed Smiths Detection’s scanning technology include London City, Bristol, Suvarnhabhum and Don Mueang airports.
