Global ATS has launched the UK’s first Air Traffic Control apprenticeship with Gloucestershire College.

The first apprentice to be selected is Pena Mason from Birmingham Airport, who previously worked in supporting roles within aviation. Mason began her training at Global ATS, following Basic and Aerodrome courses involving modules, lessons, and simulator sessions. She then returned to Birmingham Airport to start Unit Training.

“Not only will I earn my ATCO license and a Level 5 Diploma at the end of the apprenticeship, but it will also open many doors for my future career within the industry,” Mason said. “The ATCO Apprentice Scheme is a major milestone for the industry and will create so many opportunities for future generations of ATCOs.”

Mason, Birmingham Airport, Gloucestershire College, and Global ATS, held formal review meetings every 10-12 weeks to discuss progress, challenges, targets and previous goals. Birmingham Airport is keen to progress further candidates through the programme to train future Air Traffic Controllers and combat the shortage of skilled workers.

Paul Beat, Head of Head of Air Navigation Services at Birmingham Airport said: “We are delighted to have been part of the UK’s first Air Traffic Control apprenticeship scheme here at Birmingham Airport.  Pena has shown commitment and drive throughout the process and is a credit to herself and the Air Traffic Team. We look forward to seeing Pena’s achievements in the future as she advances in her career.”
