Fraport Greece closed 2024 with more than 800,000 passengers travelling through its 14 regional airports in December (an increase of 6. 7 per cent on the same month in 2023). The overall growth in passenger traffic across the year (with a total of 36 million passengers) underlines the airport operator’s pivotal role in enhancing the tourism sector and by extension the Greek economy. Domestic flights throughout the year increased by 4. 7 % (86,026) and international flights rose by 4.2 % (190,315).
Chania, Thessaloniki, Mitilini and Zakynthos all recorded strong passenger traffic throughout the year with Chania achieving 8.4 per cent growth in 2024 over 2023 and Mitilini showing 13.3 per cent growth last year compared to the previous year. A popular holiday hotspot Thessaloniki maintained its strong levels of passenger traffic with more than 7.3 million passengers passing through it in 2024 (5 per cent growth on 2023).
Fraport Greece has also continued to make investments in the infrastructure across its portfolio, allocating up to €50 million annually for the upgrade and modernisation of facilities.
Commenting on the “significant achievements” made in 2024, Alexander Zinell, CEO of Fraport Greece, said “Through continuous investments, strategic planning and a commitment to sustainability, we contribute to the ongoing development of the country’s tourism sector. We are proud of our contribution to the dynamic growth of the Greek economy and remain dedicated to providing high-quality services to all travellers.”
To help with air traffic movements and enhance operations Fraport Greece has allocated €146 million towards the renovation and reconstruction of runways since taking over the concession of the airports. It is also planning additional investments of up to €200 million to increase the capacity of several of its airports that are nearing their capacity limits, including those at Kos, Corfu, Mykonos and Santorini.
