The reconstruction works, which are part of Fraport Greece’s concession agreement as the airport operator, are being carried out to further enhance safety. Works include extensive interventions to reconfigure the Runway Strips and the Ruwnway Safety Areas (RESA).
The airport operator, which oversees 14 airports in Greece, will temporarily suspend runway operations at the eight airports while the work is ongoing. A measure that is deemed necessary due to the size and complexity of the project.
Suspension dates vary from two-week closures to 24-hour or 48-hour weekly closures over longer periods. All runway suspensions will be implemented during the low winter season, when air traffic is less frequent. Fraport Greece also emphasised the specified intervals are the shortest possible period during which the runways can be suspended.
Fraport Greece also stated that during these periods “helicopters will carry out emergency flights (e.g. ambulance helicopters for patients’ airlifts, search and rescue, fire-fighting, humanitarian, government and other national flights) if required.
The statement also confirmed that All other airport services within the terminals, will be available to the interested public.
The runway reconstruction work is being conducted as part of Greece’s Recovery and Resilience Fund financing.
