European airports have marked a major step forward in their climate commitments, with 328 airports across 38 countries now signed up to achieving Net Zero emissions for operations under their direct control. Of these, 36 airports have already reached the milestone — more than double last year’s total.
The update was released as the airport community meets in Prague for the 36th ACI EUROPE Annual Congress & General Assembly. The latest figures show continued growth in both participation and ambition under the European Airport Industry Net Zero Resolution, first launched in 2019.
The resolution now covers airports representing 83% of European passenger traffic. Fourteen new airports have joined the commitment over the past year, including Alghero, Florence, Olbia Costa Smeralda, Pisa, Tirana, Avignon Provence, Caen Carpiquet, Deauville, Rouen, Atatürk, Dalaman, Rize Artvin, Limak Kosovo and Bacău.
Airports are required to underpin their commitments with publicly available decarbonisation roadmaps. To date, 109 roadmaps have been submitted to the open repository, including 19 new or updated plans covering 48 airports.
The resolution remains one of the most ambitious collective climate commitments in the transport sector. Notably, 106 airports have set a target of reaching Net Zero by 2030 — two decades ahead of global climate goals.
Olivier Jankovec, director general of ACI EUROPE, said the momentum demonstrates the sector’s determination to decarbonise despite wider political and economic pressures. “The steady growth in participation in the Net Zero resolution and the increasing number of airports achieving Net Zero show that our commitment is steadfast,” he said. “For European airports, pursuing Net Zero emissions is non negotiable as this is about our licence to operate and grow.”
