Avflight breaks ground on new facility at KDET
In line with the Coleman A. Young International Airport’s (KDET) rejuvenation, Avflight has broken ground on a new multi-million-dollar facility. The state-of-the-art FBO is expected to boost Detroit’s aviation infrastructure.
During a groundbreaking ceremony held in June, local dignitaries, including Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Airport Director Jason Watt and Avflight’s senior management team, were present to mark the milestone. The new facility is scheduled for completion in December 2025.
“With its proximity to the city’s business district and automotive industry, this new general aviation terminal will serve as a gateway to commerce, tourism and opportunity,” said Avflight’s VP of Operations, Joe Meszaros.
“It will stand as a beacon of growth, job creation and educational opportunity for Detroit citizens,” he added.

Avflight’s multimillion-dollar investment underlines the FBO operator’s commitment to Detroit’s aviation future.
The modern complex, will feature a 5,000 sq. ft. FBO for general aviation aircraft with fuel and ground handling services. It will also incorporate a 20,000 sq. ft. heated hangar and a 1,440 sq. ft. aircraft parking garage.
The project builds on the momentum of multiple city-led improvements at the airport, including a recently completed USD 3.5 million renovation and LED taxi lighting upgrades. Upcoming investments, such as ramp pavement improvements, a new engineered material arresting system, a new control tower (planned for 2026) and upgraded snow removal equipment are all in the pipeline.
The groundbreaking ceremony marks more than just bricks and mortar, said Meszaros. “With Avflight’s partnership and the city’s ongoing investments, KDET is poised to become a world-class gateway that drives economic vitality and provides broad opportunities for our community.”
