As part of a wider infrastructure modernisation programme, Cornwall Airport Newquay is upgrading its radar system to help manage Cornwall’s airspace more efficiently. Easat Radar Systems has been appointed to supply the system.
The airport, which currently has eight airline partners, is planning on upgrading its radar system as part of a wider modernisation project and will see the current system being replaced with a modern, high-performance system designed to keep the skies safer and deliver improved safety.
The upgrade is part of the Cornwall Airport Newquay Development Strategy and is being part-funded through the GBP 186 million UK Shared Prosperity Fund via the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Programme.
“The airport is at the heart of Cornwall’s economy,” said Cllr Leigh Frost, Leader of Cornwall Council. “It provides essential global links for business and our residents and plays a key role in attracting investment into the region.”
He added that the new radar system will help support safe and reliable operations for commercial, business and general aviation, military activity, lifeline services and Spaceport Cornwall.
Cllr Frost was joined by Dean McAllister, Senior Airfield Engineer, who said: “Investing in a new Easat radar system is a long-term commitment to protecting the skies over Cornwall and the communities we serve. It strengthens the resilience of every flight that brings visitors to our county, supports local businesses, connects families and underpins vital services such as Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust and HM Coastguard.”
