Sullivan County International Airport’s new terminal has entered the final phase of construction to transform it into a state-of-the-art gateway to the Catskill region.
The construction project, which started in 2023, involves the development of a 15,000 sq. ft. energy-efficient terminal facility with USD18.5 million awarded from the Governor’s USD230 million Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition, administered by the New York State Department of Transportation.
Situated 90 miles from New York City, the terminal at Sullivan County originally opened in 1969 and is a vital gateway to the Catskill Mountains region, home to the historic site of the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival – and now home to the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts.
“Our airports serve as vital gateways to our communities that invite visitors and drive local economies by facilitating tourism and generating opportunities for business development,” said Governor Kathy Hochul.
Terminal design
The airports new spacious interior will feature cost-effective laminated timber beams, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the runway and Catskill Mountains beyond. An all-electric HVAC system with high efficiency heat pumps integrated with geothermal walls will replace the outdated inefficient furnace. Meanwhile, a new restaurant and bar area, outdoor patio area and deck overlooking the runway will enhance the passenger experience for those travelling through or just visiting the airport. The new facility will also feature solar panels, new restrooms, an upgraded fire suppression water tanka nd pump distribution system and electric charging infrastructure.
“The ongoing transformation happening at Sullivan County International Airport and the eight other airports that received funding from our revitalisation initiative sends a signal that our upstate cities and towns are open for business and available for community members and visitors to explore, enjoy and return to again and again,” she continued.
In addition to Sullivan County, other airports benefitting from the Governor’s funding include Albany Airport, Watertown Airport, Saratoga County Airport, Syracuse Hancock Airport, Ogdensburg Airport, Greater Binghamton Airport, Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester Airport and the Adirondack Regional Airport.

Referencing Governor Hochul’s vision to elevate New York’s Upstate airports to meet the expectations of 21st century travel, Marie Therese Dominguez, New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner, said Sullivan County’s “stunning facility, complete with modern amenities including sustainable and cost-effective building features, is poised to emerge as a vibrant new gateway to the Catskill region, broadening tourism and business opportunities in this historic and breathtaking region of New York state.”
