Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina has unveiled its 34,000 sq. ft Concourse E Expansion. The $50m construction project adds one gate to the north end of the concourse and relocates nine existing gates to the new space for operational efficiency and to prepare for jet bridges.

Concourse E is the airport’s busiest concourse serving more than 300 daily arrivals and departures and houses regional jets operated by American Airlines affiliates.

While work is ongoing on the expansion’s four new concessions that will open throughout the course of the year new amenities  in the newly expanded facility include a pet relief area, mother’s room, restrooms with touchless fixtures, a family restroom, seats with integrated power, LED lighting and new wayfinding signage.

Meanwhile the ceiling is adorned with 29 suspended brown glass sculptures (comprised of 5,000 pieces of blown glass) by local artist, Michael Davis of Durham. Lights illuminating the glass sculptures change colour every four hours.

The expansion project also enables the installation of jet bridges on all Concourse E gates by 2023.  Additional plans for the existing Concourse E include new carpet, terrazzo flooring in the walkways, LED lighting and more seating with integrated power. Renovations are scheduled to begin in late summer and wrap up at the end of 2025.
