Bangalore international Airport Limited (BIAL) – which operates Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru (KIAB) – has entered into a 20-year agreement with InterGlobe Aviation, operators of India’s leading domestic carrier, to build a state-of-the-art Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility.
Five acres of land at the Bengaluru Airport campus will be sub-leased to InterGlobe Aviation, to build a 13,000 sq. metre hangar, which will be able to accommodate two narrow body aircraft. The facility, which is slated to become operational by 2020, will also feature support infrastructure, including an engine QEC shop warehouse and engineering offices for all repair and maintenance.
With a fleet of over 200 aircraft and operating over 1300 daily flights, including 158 daily departures out of Bengaluru, Indigo is among the fastest growing carriers in the world. Hari Marar, MD and CEO at BIAL stated: “We believe that we must always offer a comprehensive bouquet of services that will facilitate the growth of our airline partners. IndiGo has been one of the fastest growing carriers at the BLR Airport. The outcome of this agreement will create more connectivity and open new markets – further enhancing its growth. Referencing how Kempegowda International Airport with its strategic location will play an integral role for IndiGo going forward, Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, the airline’s COO said: “It is for this reason that IndiGo decided to build a hangar as the core of our maintenance centre in South.”
